BASIC INFORMATION
Penguin is a game about collecting fish across 3 different modes. Endless Mode that has you running infinitely. Challenge Mode with actual levels and different objectives and 10 Micro Mode that throws you into a series of 10 micro challenges with 30 second objectives.
HOW TO PLAY
Playing is easy enough, you can move, jump and hold run to move faster. Playing Endless Mode or a runner style level forces you forward, but lets you throttle your speed by pressing forward or back. There are more traditional methods of movement in the Challenge Mode and 10 Micro Mode that let you move left and right. To slide, simply press down.
KEYBOARD CONTROLS
Default controls:
- Throttle speed = (ARROW KEYS) or (A) or (D)
- Run = (X or Shift)
- Jump = (C) or (ctrl) or (space)
- Slide = (Down arrow) or (S) ( + jump to glide)
- Pause = (Esc)
GAMEPAD CONTROLS
- Throttle speed = D-pad
- Run = X button
- Jump = A button
- Slide = Down or right shoulder ( + jump to glide)
- Pause = Start button
SLIDE & GLIDE 1
Sliding is faster than running and its simple to do, press down. A slide will get you under low objects, under enemies or plow through ice blocks. The trick is that after a quarter of a second, you stand back up. To maintain the slide, you need to jump in the air where you can then glide if you hold the jump button.
SLIDE & GLIDE 2
Sliding up steep inclines will end your slide. Maintaining your slide & glide will keep your score hold going and give you bonus points for each second you slide & glide. Bumping into walls or enemies while sliding will break your slide and score hold. You can always end your slide by pressing up or back.
CHARGE JUMPS
With a charged jump, you can leap higher. To charge a jump, stand in one place for a single second. Once the jump is charged the character will blink and be able to jump higher than a normal jump.
ICE BLOCKS
Transparent ice blocks are around to hinder your progress. Some ice blocks contain power-ups or fish. There are three ways to break ice blocks. Jump at them from beneath, slide through them or use the chili pepper power up to jump through them. When you slide through an ice block, it adds a full second to maintain your slide.
SCORE HOLD
Any amount of points earned are held for a second before they’re added to the score. Getting more points resets the score hold timer to a full second. Sliding & gliding will maintain the score hold. If you hit an enemy or bump into a wall while sliding, that will break the score hold and those points will not be added to your score.
POINTS: FROM ENEMIES
You can get points for enemies by jumping over them or sliding under them. If you maintain your slide & glide, each enemy point value will increase. To count as a hop over, you need to be closer to the foe and not high above it. Sliding through enemies with the chili pepper will also get the same amount of points.
POINTS: FROM OTHER THINGS
Small points are given for breaking through ice blocks and collecting fish. 100 points are given for collecting things like power-ups and coins. Secrets are worth 1,000 points when they are discovered.
POINTS: ICE BLOCKS
Ice blocks are worth a base of 10 points. If you maintain your slide & glide, the point value for breaking the ice blocks will continue going up by 10 points.
MODES
Before you play the game, there are five modes. Challenge Mode and 10 Micro Mode require Training Mode to be completed before they will unlock.
MODE 1: ENDLESS EASY
A mode for kids or people who like one button controls. Easy endless only allows for a jump. Not sliding, no speed control. You also have the possibility of ice cream if your health is low enough. Oh and seals will damage you rather than eating you.
MODE 2: ENDLESS MODE
The game that started the game is an endless runner found in the Endless Mode. See how far you can get, your highest score and so on. While you have a throttle to control your speed, there’s no way to stop the push forward.
MODE 3: CHALLENGE MODE
For the sake of diversity, Challenge Mode changes the game with each map. These challenges have different methods to play the game, beyond a runner. Each one has a different objective for victory whether its collecting X fish, surviving 1 minute while collecting clocks to breaking Y amount of ice blocks. Take note that there are 3 difficulties, and each difficulty keeps track of either the best score or time.
MODE 4: 10 MICRO MODE
Similar to Challenge Mode, the 10 Micro Mode will select ten random micro challenges. Each micro has to be completed in less than 30 seconds. Win or lose, you will always progress and receive a grade at the end of the ten micros.
MODE 5: TRAINING MODE
This mode will train new penguins the simple and more complex methods of traversal. Easy jumps and instruction to slide and glide methods. Its also necessary to play through Training Mode to unlock Challenge Mode and 10 Micro Mode.
HEADS UP DISPLAY
Up at the top left you have health, points, distance and fish. Then over on the top right, depending on the mode you will see a time limit and a how far you are from completing a challenge or a micro. This can be time, distance, fish, blocks and so on depending on the objective.
GAME OVER SCREEN PART 1
Endless Mode has a traditional game over screen that shows you a few statistics from your run. It also shows you your high score and furthest distance. If you get a new record, you’ll be notified with blinking text.
After the game over screen, if you’ve earned any bonus coins, you’ll see them tallied and fly into place.
GAME OVER SCREEN PART 2
The game over screen ends on the goal screen. If you’ve completed a goal, you’ll earn its reward in coins. This will be covered better in the goals section.
SUCCESS & DEFEAT SCREENS
Like the game over screen, you’ll find the success and defeat screens after winning or losing a challenge or micro. After the screen, you’ll be rewarded with bonus coins and or goal bonuses if you’ve earned either.
DIFFICULTY
Difficulty can be set at the start of any challenge. This will of course make the challenge more lengthily and increase the objective, but it will also reduce the character’s health. On the highest difficulty, on the first bit of damage, that will end the run.
CHARACTER SELECT
Once you select a mode, you’re taken to the character select. The characters in game are purely aesthetic. Pick your favorite character and play. To select a random character, press down. Some penguins need to be purchased from either the character select or the shop.
EDITOR
The editor lets people make levels in game. It has its own manual in the editor menu. To find the editor, please visit the title screen.
SETTINGS MENU
You should know the settings mode has all sorts of tweaks for the game. Things like the sound volume, music volume, controller shake, screen shake and so on. The settings menu can be found on both the title screen and the pause menu.
CONFIGURE CONTROLS SCREEN
To rebind keys and configure the controls, please take a visit to the settings screen toward the bottom. Each control function can have two keys to make them work. The game will refuse to let you back out if you have the same key used for more than one control function. These will be indicated in red.
GOALS & GOALS SCREEN
The game has three goals at all times. Goals can only be accomplished by participating in Endless Mode, Challenge Mode or 10 Micro Mode. Once the goal is complete, a new goal will take its place and the previous goal will go up a level for the next time its seen. Completing goals gets you coins.
COINS 1
The shop currency is of course gold coins that can be obtained a number of methods. The two easiest ways to obtain coins are at the end of each run. Completing goals will reward you with coins. The higher the level of the goal, the more coins will be obtained. The second method is for every 1,000 final points from a run will get a single coin.
COINS 2
Coins can add up after time. Bonus coins are also rewards for completing things like Training. The last method is to find coins during Endless Mode. They are uncommon compared to finding other power-ups.
SHOP SCREEN
The shop is where to spend your hard earned coins on characters and upgraded power ups. For each power-up upgrade purchased, it will last an extra second. The shop can be found in the title screen or pause menu.
POWER-UPS
When collected, power-ups will last a minimum of ten seconds. They can be enabled and upgraded in the store. For power-ups to be enabled in Endless Mode, the power-ups need to be purchased in the store.
POWER-UPS: CHILI PEPPER
The red on pepper power-up lets you hop on enemies or slide through them. When you dispatch of an enemy with the pepper power, fish will fly forth. Sliding through enemies resets the slide timer to a full second. The pepper power-up lets you jump through ice blocks, but to cancel a spin jump, press up in mid-air.
POWER-UPS: DOUBLE FISH ON FISH
This power-up doubles the fish you catch. To make it more useful, it will also double a collected coin in Endurance Mode.
POWER-UPS: FISH MAGNET
A self explanatory name, when you gets within range, fish will be pulled in to the character. The fish travel through objects and even if the power-up expires while fish are traveling, they will continue their path until collected.
HAZARDS
Avoid hazards in general. Spikes and pits will end any run. Hitting a tortoise and other enemies will lose health, but seals and polar bears will eat you immediately. You can jump over them, slide under them, use a chili pepper to slide through most of them, but hazards should still be avoided.
HAZARDS: SPIKE PACK TORTOISE
The tortoise is wearing a spiked backpack and should be avoided. Fortunately, they move slower than tar. Well most of them, there are others that move faster. Most pace back and forth while a specific breed will fall off cliffs.
HAZARDS: SEAL OF QUALITY
The hazardous Seal of Quality will devour penguins whole and should be avoided. The seal can snatch penguins from out of mid air, but to make up for this they’re generally non moving.
HAZARDS: ALBATOSS THE ALBATROSS
There are a variety of Albatross’s out there. Ones that hover in place, ones that move horizontal, others that move vertical and still some that move clockwise or counter clockwise. The Albatross with a pink helmet will Albatoss eggs at you.
HAZARDS: BONGO THE BEAR
This polar bear is dangerous and will eat characters in front of it. Bongo is immune to the chili pepper as he must like spicy food. Jumping over Bongo is worth big points due to how dangerous he is.
HAZARDS: RUSTY THE SNOWMAN
Rusty never moves, he’s frozen or rusted in place. You can slide under him or jump over him from a higher ledge. If jumped over, you can juggle his hat for increasing points.
HAZARDS: FIERO
Fieros give you points when you go through them, but it is a bit tough to actually make it through the center. Keep in mind there is fire that raises above the ring and it will damage you.
HAZARDS: IKE THE HAZARD SPIKE
Ikes are found floating the the air or on tracks. They can be destroyed with chili peppers, but that’s about it.
HAZARDS: ICICLE JAMMER
Jammers are icicles that will fall when walked beneath. If you stay moving, you should be fine, depending on high high up they are. There are also challenges and micros that will drop them from the sky. When dropped from the sky, they will slowly appear before they drop full force.
EXTRAS MENU
The extras menu can be found in both the title screen and the pause menu. This menu contains menu items for credits, achievements and stats. It also contains three resets for data, challenges and achievements.
